Desiring to preserve my wooden furniture, I use coasters under my drinking glasses. The more humid the atmosphere, the more the glasses "sweat." In Africa the humidity reaches such high levels, that the coasters fill and overflow. My attempt to avoid the resulting stain is futile.
The dry season gives me a brief reprieve. Moisture is instantly sucked up into the thirsty atmosphere and my tables remain unscathed.
Just like those glasses, I allow my surroundings to dictate whether or not I leave a mark for Christ. For example, at restaurants I pray before eating, thanking God for the food and the time of fellowship over the meal. This may leave a small mark, a witness for Christ to those who see it.
However, if my friend and I have been talking about issues that need more prayer after the meal, would I hesitate to spend 10 minutes or more in prayer at the table$%: That may leave a rather large mark. Would I allow the environment to suck up the witness for Christ that I could have$%:
Jesus said, "Therefore do not fear...everyone who shall confess Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever shall deny Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven. Do not think I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword." (Matthew 10:31-34) May we leave a sizeable mark.
